Want to Become a Makeup Artist?

The idea of being a makeup artist just sounds like a lot of fun doesn’t it? For those of us who get a creative thrill out of creating an image with hair and makeup, the idea of getting paid to do this sounds like a dream job. Since I get so many questions from young women who say they really want to , I thought a practical look at this career would be a good idea.

While you are bound to hear some horror stories of women who went to beauty career school and can’t find work, most of the time it seems like a matter of skill and persistence. There are definitely a ton of jobs available for makeup artists, from Hollywood productions, stage work to modeling and photographers, to name a few.

If you are really serious about your desire to become a makeup artist, the first step is to get the skills you need to succeed. Yes, you may have a natural gift, but a career beauty schools offers a lot of advantages. You should seek out a school that will expose you to several different specialties in the makeup industry, from special effects to makeup for photography. While you may think you know what you want to do, you could also end up being exposed to a career path you never knew existed.

A really good cosmetology school will also prepare you for the business aspects of a career as a makeup artist. Many makeup artists work as freelancers, which means constantly looking for work and marketing yourself. Ask potential schools if they will help you build your resume, network, and create a portfolio. Don’t be shy about asking these questions up front. They will make a huge difference in your ability to get good paying jobs once you graduate.

Finally, keep moving forward. So many girls never take step one towards their dream of becoming makeup artists, and that’s a shame. Five years down the road you will either be where you are know, or at a minimum, you will have gained some hands-on experience about something you love. I really encourage your to get all the information you can, and just take a step, any step, in the direction of your dream.

Sincerely,
