Love shoes to the point of obsession? Well apparently you are not alone. Carrie, from Sex in the City, made it ok for women to admit to their shoe fetish, and even admit how much of their salary is devoted to this obsession. The right business suit can make or break you in an interview. It can also set the tone for presentations. Finding one that didn’t cost a fortune was my mission this morning.

Now I have a confession to make. I hate shopping. I loathe sifting through racks and trying on clothes. I tend to know what I want and steamroll my way through a store until I can get it and get out. So in most cases I stick to major, well organized department stores.

My sister on the other hand can shop for hours, wading through tons of clothes to find the half dozen that she has to have at a fantastic price. I admire her for this, as I wave from the nearest coffee shop.

Today I had to buy a fabulous business suit and stick to a new budget I set. I am determined to build my portfolio further this year and that means less lattes and more bargain shopping. So I asked the Queen of Savings how she does it. She always seems to have the hottest name brands at amazingly low prices. One of her secrets is Marshalls.

Now as soon as she said the name, a shiver went down my spine. I had once spent five hours with her at one of their mega stores as she fought off greedy clothes pinching fingers and I acted as the final veto on outfit after outfit.

Upon seeing the look of horror on my face, she explained that Marshalls has a rack just for women’s business suits. It is also clearly marked and divided into sizes. Not quite believing her I still trudged down there early in the morning to beat the crowds.

I got there at 9:30 am and there were less than a handful of customers in the store. I found the suits easily by the gigantic hanging sign and was able to pick out three possibilities in less than ten minutes. The suit that I ended up purchasing is from BCBG - originally $170 and I got it for $75 - not bad. And that was for both the jacket and the pants. I have to say that I was impressed. The suits were all in great condition and brand new and they were all designer brand names.  I saw suits discounted up to 75%! Amazing.

Now, I still don’t think I go shop there for my day to day wear but for women’s business suits I will be back. If you are looking for designer suits at fantastic prices check out Marshalls and prepare to be amazed.

Hi all

I have been getting a lot of emails on how to pick elegant prom dresses. Yes, it is that time of year again.

I picked up the local paper and their was this fashion article stating that this year’s trend is metallic colored mermaid style dresses. For heaven’s sake who thinks of these things.

If you are currently shopping for a prom dress, my advice is to ignore the trends. I mean look at this one. How many women actually look good in metallic colors? And to top that off with mermaid style dresses is ridiculous. Unless you are a size two this is not a good look for most of us.

Choose a prom dress with this criteria in mind instead:

1) Look for colors that actually compliment your skin tone - regardless of what color is “in” right now.

2) Look for a dress that compliments your particular body type.  For example if you have a curvier figure, you may want to look into empire style dresses. They tend to accentuate your positives while minimizing those assets that you may not want to advertise.

3) Think ahead. It is ten years from now and you are looking at these pictures. Do you want to think, ” Wow, I looked great” or ” What the heck was I thinking???”

Also pay attention to rule number three above when considering your hair style. Go for a classic style, like having your hair pulled up in a nice bun. This is not the time to try a new cut that you “think” will look cute.  Instead take what you have and work it into a simple, classic style. A trim is fine but nothing drastic!

Other than that focus on having fun. Most of us have only one prom. Enjoy it!

P.S. If you are ordering your dress online be sure that it will be delivered at least a week in advance. That way you have time to get it adjusted, if need be.

I just discovered this amazing little boutique clothing store in Mary Brickell Village in Miami Florida called Blush. Actually it isn’t little. It fills two store fronts but the staff is so warm, friendly and helpful that you will feel as if you are in a tiny boutique. Hmmm that isn’t quite right either. When I think of boutiques I general imagine high prices and for a shop off of Brickell Avenue this store is really reasonably priced.

I began my shopping excursion across the street at another charming women’s store but walked out when I realized that one tiny blouse was about $250. Pretty, but I can do better than that. So I wandered over to Blush. Now by the style of clothing that I saw from the outside I expected equally high prices.

What I found was three blouses that I absolutely love for less than $200 all together. The material of each of their items is so soft and feels amazing against your skin. They also have a really nice selection of different styles and colors. Each of the two store fronts is run by an equally nice sales girl. The young lady that ended up helping me was great at picking out items that fit what I was looking for. She also didn’t try to upsell me on items that didn’t look right on my body.

I don’t know about you but I really appreciate tactful honesty from the staff at clothing stores. Returning items that look horrible in a “real” mirror just pisses me off.

The only thing that I wasn’t crazy about was the dressing rooms. They are huge but don’t have mirrors. So you end up having to walk out to view yourself for each item.

The clothes and service though makes this minor issue easy to overlook. They have items for casually strolling in this fashionable neighborhood and night time attire that is bound to turn heads. What more could you ask for?

As women we all love shoes. You may not be a Carrie, from Sex in the City, shoe fanatic but wearing the right shoes can make you feel dainty and feminine or powerful and diva like.
