August 27, 2008 No Comments
The latest question posted was about honey and hair. Apparently there are a lot of “all natural” hair care products that claim to have honey in them. Now I know that I have mentioned that honey is a good exfoliant and has great antibacterial properties but as a hair care ingredient, it leaves a lot to be desired.
Honey is sticky. What you want is a product that leaves your hair smooth. Honey will not do this. Plus it is difficult to get out of your hair. Go to the old standbys for your hair - natural oils as a conditioner maybe or a beer rinse to give your hair body.
Use honey to exfoliate your skin. Combine it with an oil base and the natural sugars will exofliate your skin leaving it feeling silky smooth.

Frizzy hair is the bane of many women’s existence, including mine. All of the women in my family have curly hair and with the Florida heat that leads to frizz. You could go to extremes and get the japanese hair straightening system, like my sister did. It works and she only has to do a quick blow dry now to keep it looking great.
For those of you who don’t want to invest hundreds of dollars for this fairly permanent straightener you can try these simple strategies:
1) Deep condition your hair at least once a week.
2) Use leave in conditioner each time you wash your hair.
3) Use products specifically designed to fight frizz like John Frieda’s products.
4) You can speak with your stylist to design a cut that will minimize the frizz. Layers tend to make you more susceptible to frizzy hair, for example. A blunt cut tends to leave you with less frizz.
How to Get Amazing Smelling and Super Soft Hair
August 6, 2008 No Comments
Hi all
I just tried the most amazing hair mask by Sexy Hair. It is called their Pumpkin Puree Mask and it really does smell like pumpkin pie. Now you may not realize the significance of this but living down here in the land of the oppressive heat, I need a reminder that the cooler feel of Autumn is on its way. So I tried this mask and allowed myself to dream of cool October days and those wonderful scents that accompany them.
Then I felt my hair afterwards and was even more impressed. My hair was softer and smelled just faintly enough of pumpkin and spices. Throughout my day I got this subtle hint of that wonderful time of year and amazingly the heat didn’t feel so bad anymore. All that in one conditioner. Wow!
If you are looking longingly toward that amazing time of year give the Pumpkin Puree Mask by Sexy Hair a try.
Sincerely,

Ladies of color have always had a special challenge when it comes to getting hair style advice. The advice and beauty reviews out there are often not targeted towards the special needs of those with thick African-American hair. Getting afro hair advice can be tricky if you don’t know who to ask or what to use.
Typically when a person hears the term afro they think of the teased, high hairstyle. However, many times this word is simply used to describe African-American hair. This may help you when you are searching for afro hair advice.
-
One of the keys to getting good afro hair advice is to make sure you are getting it from a good source.
-
Use the proper tools
-
Use appropriate styling products.
You need to make sure that the advice is for African American hair types and not other ethnic hair types. What works for one person may not always work for another person since each ethnic group seems to have their own hair types and hair issues. (Caucasian parents who have adopted African American children tell me this is a common issue.)
Some of the common concerns that African American women have about their hair is dealing with it being dry and brittle. Growing African American hair long can be a challenge, but it is not necessarily impossible.
To grow your African American hair long you have to find products that help promote the strength in hair and combat dryness which can make it brittle. A good product to try is Phytokarite Ultra Nourishing Hair Mask by Phyto. It works to replenish hair moisture.
However, I’d still recommend that you ask a stylist who understands hair texture, tools and products what they recommend for you.

Hair Care for Curly Girls

Hair Care for Curly Girls
Ever since I started writing beauty reviews, I’ve been getting e-mails from those of you with curly hair. While the rest of us are full of envy for your gorgeous locks, it seems that having that head of lovely curls can be a huge challenge if you don’t know what to do with it.
I hear the same refrain: that hair care advice usually involves how to add curls, rather than manage the ones you’ve got now. So I asked a local hair expert who specializes in hair care for curly girls what the deal is. Here are his tips for maintaining a head of frizz-free and manageable curls.

Big Hair Makes a Comeback
June 15, 2008 No Comments
If you have seen the runways or read any beauty reviews then you know that big hair is hot again. Big hair has been popular throughout the years and many would say it saw its biggest revival in the 80’s when we girls would tease our hair to heights that seemed impossible.
Does that scare you? Relax!Today’s big hair is sleeker. It is more about getting the volume then the height.
A simple style that represents big hair of the new millennium is the simple bouffant. Here’s a step by step guide to this often revived do:
- Take a section of hair at the top near your hair line.
- Tease and then lightly comb to make it smooth.
- Then the hair section is pinned back.
- The rest of the hair can be pulled into a ponytail which creates a lot of height on the top of the head.
Big hair does not mean a lot of beauty supplies either. All you need is a teasing comb and a hair spray, like Frederic Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray, which gives you a strong, yet gentle hold. You can easily create the look in a matter of minutes. It’s a great look for almost anywhere from the office to a night out on the town.
The Bridesmaid: Hair Made Easy
May 21, 2008 No Comments
Every girl dreams of her wedding. The gown. The groom. The dancing. The toasts.
What about your best girlfriends? Your maid of honor and bridesmaids truly add something special to the day. After all, you couldn’t have gotten to this point without them! So make sure that you plan for their role in your big day. By giving a little thought to the makeup, hair and accessories, you’ll eliminate any wedding day drama over bridesmaid hair or some other detail.
Now, I’m not saying that your girlfriends have anything but the best of taste. After all, they chose you for a friend, right? And you chose each woman as a bridesmaid. Hair and makeup ideas can differ greatly however, even among the best of friends. So if you don’t want Karen to show up with frizzy hair, or Anne to go overboard on the blue eye shadow, you’d better have a plan.
A good start for ideas would be beauty reviews. There is a lot of advice and information in beauty reviews to help you find a great hairstyle that works for all your bridesmaids. The key to good bridesmaid hair is simple if you remember 3 key points in your planning:

Despite differences in hair length, an updo is an elegant style for anyone with long enough hair.
A good choice is the classic French braid.
Here’s how to put your hair (or any bridesmaid hair) in a French braid:

Finishing off the braid for a smooth look involves choosing a great hair spray. Without hairspray you will find that stray hairs tend to pull out and the look can become messy. A good hairspray to use is Frederic Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray. It will work great for any hair type and help keep hair in place all day long. It’s the little things like this that will make your big day great.
