So you have a beautiful new compact full of eye shadow colors that compliment your complexion to a tee. But you don’t know what to do with them! Does the dark shade go on the top or the bottom of your lid? Do you start at the inner or outer part of your eye? Well, you’re not alone. How to apply multi color eye makeup is a skill that most women just try to figure out as they go. The whole point of using more than one eye shadow color is to create shadows and contours in just the right places. But where are those places- you ask?

Let’s start by choosing a color palette that includes 3 eye shadow shades and an eyeliner that you like. For explanation, we’ll use the Bare Escentuals iQuad Eyeshadow Compact Quad.

Start with the olive (or your chosen color) eyeliner. Use your hand to pull skin taut and gently line from the inner corner of the eye outward. Use the included buffing brush to apply the lightest of your three tones (ivory) to your lid area, up to its natural crease. Use your next lightest color (citrus twist) to cover from your crease to just below your brow. Brush outwards, in an attempt to let the color flow, rather than stop abruptly. Finally, use your darkest shade (bronze) to emphasize the back corner of your eyelid. Take care to blend your colors. The goal is to add depth, and draw attention in a subtle way.

This is just one example of how to apply multi color eye makeup. The possibilities are truly endless.

Girls- you crack me up! The e-mails I get from you are so frank and honest; it’s like sitting with my best friend (who has no problem telling me the God’s honest truth)! The most recent e-mail was from girl who basically said, “…all this eye makeup application sounds good, but I need to see it in action. Show me how to do eye shadow makeup with picture backup….please!”

OK. Sometimes a picture says it all. So here are some directions on how to do eye shadow makeup with picture explanation, for all of you. I think we’ll focus on how to make your eyes look further apart, or closer together, since a lot of us with imperfect eyes need to do this.

To Widen Eyes:

The most common problem is having eyes set too close together. Luckily, I know a great eye makeup secret for this one.

  1. You can either use a concealer that’s a bit lighter than your skin tone, or a very light shade of eye shadow. By putting that lighter color on your inner eyelid, and even on the shadows near your nose, you really open up that whole area.
  2. Then use a darker color eye shadow on the outer half of your lid.
  3. Finally, start your eyeliner about 1/4th of the way in and gradually thicken the line towards your outer eye.

To Close in Eyes:

So if the key to widening eyes is to emphasize the outer lids….BINGO. To make them appear closer together you will focus darker colors on the inner lid.

  1. Start by brushing a light color over the entire eyelid area.
  2. Use a medium dark tone on the inner half of the lid.
  3. Finally, apply your liner from the inner corner of the lid outward, and make sure to blend that outer area.
